The trees

The Booyzen line and the families that join it — each drawn in the form its own evidence supports.

A tree with invented joins in it is worse than no tree, so none of these has any. Each line is drawn in the form its own evidence supports.

The Cape Dutch line the archive carries
Drawn as a line

Graaff-Reinet, Cradock, Barkly East, then off the train at Johannesburg with nothing. The family changed one letter of its name in a war and kept the new spelling.

Kolbe
London, 1802 — a gravestone in the Karoo that agrees with it, and nine children of the Free State house
Could be drawn

George Augustus Kolbe was born in Soho and sailed from Gravesend at sixteen, turning seventeen at sea. His stone at Burgersdorp gives 7 December 1802, and two hundred years later somebody found the London church book, which gives the same day. His eldest son commanded the Bloemfontein district and died on the farm Leeuwberg in 1868 leaving eight sons and four daughters, none of them named in his obituary; nine were found in September 2026 by searching the fonts on their mother's name rather than his.

Still no chart, but the house is drawn: nine of the Commandant's twelve are now named from baptism registers and civil death registrations, and the household is at /households/. Three of the twelve are missing and the obituary is the only authority for the count.

Barry
An Overberg merchant house, or a common surname — not settled
Could be drawn

The name recurs in the archive and the connection to the Overberg Barrys is suggestive and unproved. The archive says so rather than claiming it.

No chart, and no join established.

The British women
Downing · van Jaarsveld · Mountjoy · Schoeman and the rest
A route, not a line

A Cape Dutch family that kept marrying British women. The lines that join it are the shape of the whole archive, not a footnote to it.

The form is checked, not asserted: a line counts as drawn only where this archive actually publishes a chart of it.
