The plates

Every document image on this site in one place, each with the caption it carries on its own page and a link back to where it is read. Nothing here is decorative — it is all evidence, and most of it sat unread on a family tree for years.

Click any plate to open it. The caption under each is the same one the archive uses where the document is discussed, so if a reading is corrected there it is corrected here.

The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle, 1833, p. 410. The close of his letter of 1 September 1832 — “Our new chapel is completed. It can hold and seat about 500 persons. We have commenced a Temperance Society” — signed G. A. KOLBE ; and immediately below it, “Extracts from the Journal of Mr. George Augustus Kolbe, from 8th October, 1831, to 3rd September, 1832.” The sum of his own words in this archive was one sentence at second hand until this page was opened.

Kolbe to Commandant Botha, dated Platberg, 2nd Nov., 1867” — a document the Commandant wrote, summarised and not printed. The paragraph above it is the Rev. Kolbe” — taken by a fatal fever, 4 April 1868 , “niet op ’t bed van eer, maar in het midden zijner betrekkingen” . It names his seat , which this archive did not have. The obituary’s 3 April stands: it was a Friday and his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

The same book, p. 160 — and this one withdrew a find. Three men were allowed to bring away Louw Wepener’s bones on 6 April 1866, and one is “Jan Colbe” . This archive’s Commandant is Jan Gersem Eliezer Kolbe, so the page was fetched rather than reasoned about. The type says Colbe , in a book that sets Kolbe seventeen times. Nothing was taken.
