The Marriages

Every marriage in this archive that a document places, in order. A marriage is where two lines join — and it is also the moment a family chooses a town, a church and a witness, which is why the column that matters most here is not the date.

What the places say

19 of the 20 rest on a record this archive has read. Read the right-hand column down and the family's whole movement is in it: three marriages at Graaff-Reinet and Cradock before 1850, then the north-eastern Cape for fifty years — Lady Grey, Dordrecht, Caerlaverock, Indwe — then, once and finally, Vereeniging and Johannesburg.

Two of them are the hinges of this archive. Cradock, 4 November 1838 joins Booysen to Mountjoy. Mayfair, 15 January 1949 is where this archive stops and the Lerena one begins.

Each dot is a marriage this archive can place, at the year of the record, with the town under it.

The lines a marriage joins

A marriage is an event. A line is what the event joined — and until now this page could name every marriage without once naming the eleven lines they brought together. They are ordered by the generation each first appears in.

Nobody is in a line because of their surname. Every person in this archive carries a line already, assigned and written down, so what follows is this archive's own judgement read back — not a string comparison run while the page was being built.

Every marriage, in order

A marriage is where two lines join, and it is also the moment a family chooses a town, a church and a witness — which is why the column that matters most here is not the date.

Married When Where What the record says Known from
Petrus Jacobus Booysen × Anna Maria van der Merwe 1805 Graaff-Reinet He was about seventeen. She died before March 1825, and at least one child came after that — so there was a second marriage nobody had recorded until 2026. family tree
James Montjoy × Anna Catharina Sleer 9 March 1817 Graaff-Reinet She was a widow; his origin is left blank on a page where the clerk filled everyone else's in. The blank predates the 1840 death notice by twenty-three years. a record read here
George Augustus Kolbe × Margaret Downing 1819 London Both were sixteen. The Nautilus passenger roll the following year makes them twenty — a second age overstatement in the same twelve months. a record read here
Petrus Jacobus Booysen × Elizabetha van der Merwe bef. 1828 — A second van der Merwe, named only on her son's 1908 death notice. No place and no date: the marriage is known because a child of it was born about June 1828. a record read here
David Schalk van der Merwe × Jacoba Catharina Mountjoy 24 March 1838 Cradock Eight months before her sister married in the same town. a record read here
Petrus Jacobus Booysen × Johanna Catharina Mountjoy 4 November 1838 Cradock THE JUNCTION. Booysen meets Mountjoy, and the two surnames that carry this archive are joined. He signed her death notice twenty-five years later. a record read here
John Augustus Barry I × Margaretha Wilhelmina Elizabeth Mary Kolbe 23 Feb 1846 Colesberg READ AT THE PAGE, 9 OCTOBER 2026 — ENTRY 735 OF THE COLESBERG MARRIAGE REGISTER. FamilySearch 1:1:6FB4-KHS4, image 3:1:3Q9M-CSV8-8SZQ-L, image 189 of 202. THE CLERK WROTE “JOHN BERRY” AND THE MAN SIGNED “JOHN BARRY”, three lines apart on the same entry — which is the whole reason this record was invisible: every search this archive ever ran was for Barry, and the index follows the clerk. She is entered Margaretha Wilhelmina Elizabeth Kolbe and signs Margaret Wilhelmina Elizabeth Kolbe. Both jongman and jongedochter; married na huwelijks geboden, after banns; residence STORMBERG SPRUIT; by THOMAS REID, Leeraar der Nederduitsche Hervormde Kerk, in the presence of G. W. VOLBERG and a VAN DER WALT — the same two witness entries 734, 735 and 736, so they are the church's standing witnesses and not family. AND THE CONSENT COLUMN IS THE FINDING. It reads “DE WEDUWE KOLBE, MOEDER” — the widow Kolbe, mother: Margaret Downing, consenting for her daughter fourteen months after the Settler died. NOBODY IS NAMED ON THE GROOM'S SIDE. The entry above names two fathers and the entry below names two; this one names one parent and leaves the other half of the column empty. A register with a column for his father, left blank, is the same answer his death notice gives — the colony had nobody to ask. THIS ROW SAID 1850 UNTIL 28 SEPTEMBER 2026, AND THEIR ELDEST SON WAS BORN IN 1847. The 1850 came from the word “probably”, written by their son R. P. Barry on his father's death notice in 1915 — the same son who had written “Unknown” on his mother's notice three months earlier. The archive's own kin file drew JOHN AUGUSTUS BARRY II, born 13 March 1847, under that marriage the whole time. A gate refuses that arrangement now. THE DATE AND PLACE ARE FROM A BOOK AND ARE MARKED inf ACCORDINGLY: Prof. C. Pama's South African family genealogies, reported to David by a correspondent in November 1999 — “John who married Margaretha Wilhelmina Elizabeth Kolbe in Colesberg on feb 23, 1846”. What makes it safe to adopt is not the book. It is that this archive's own people file has said married 1846 all along, and that 1850 is arithmetically impossible. The Colesberg marriage register would make it doc, and it has not been read. An Irish carpenter and a Settler's daughter. Both their death notices survive, filed on the same day in 1915, and the two disagree about when he died. AND THIS ARCHIVE INDEPENDENTLY PUTS THE FAMILY AT COLESBERG THAT FORTNIGHT. Her brother the Commandant had a son, GEORGE AUGUSTUS, baptised at Colesberg on 8 MARCH 1846 — thirteen days after this wedding, in the same town, at the same font. Their father the Settler's own death notice had been signed at Colesberg in January 1845. Pama's date is not corroborated by Pama: it is corroborated by a baptism register this archive read on its own account, for a different household, a fortnight later. a record read here
George Mountjoy × Maria Sophia Botha 20 August 1848 Cradock Certificate 735. Thirteen children — and their forenames run out through three more surnames. a record read here
Petrus Jacobus Booysen × Johanna Margaritha Pretorius bef. 1863 — The second marriage his own death notice refuses to name. A christening named her in the end — the oldest open question on this site, answered by a baptism rather than a death. a record read here
Francis McCabe × Anna Jacoba van der Merwe 13 Jul 1871 Orange Free State THE IMAGE IS READ, AND THE REGISTER SAYS THE WORD IN ITS OWN HAND. She is entered “ANNA JACOBA KOLBE, GEB: VAN DER MERWE”, aged 46, condition WEDUWE, no occupation, living at LEEUWBERG (BLOEMF.) — the farm her first husband died on. He is FRANCIS McCABE, 53, condition WEDUWNAAR, LANDDROST, of Bloemfontein. So this archive's duplicate is withdrawn on the document and not merely on the arithmetic: she is the Commandant's widow, under his surname, as the tree's “about April 1871” never quite said. Married by LICENTIE rather than banns, with the consent column empty because both were of age; entry 874, stamped 5167; solemnised by GUSTAV RADLOFF, V.D.M. in the church of the Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Gemeente at Bloemfontein. SHE SIGNED IT HERSELF, A. Jacoba Kolbe geboren van der merwe, which is the first time this archive has seen her hand. Witnesses: an illegible first signature and [J or F]. M. DE VILLIERS. FamilySearch 1:1:6ZH1-PJDY, image 3:1:3Q9M-CSK8-G98P-6, DGS 008145483 image 186 of 283. a record read here
Jan Hendrik Kolbe × Rose Maria McCabe 4 Jun 1872 Bloemfontein THE IMAGE IS READ, AND IT NAMES NO FATHERS — THIS FORM HAS NO COLUMN FOR THEM. He is 23 and a VEEBOER; she is 17 with no occupation; both are entered once, across the two lines, as JONGELIEDEN. AND THEY LIVE ON THE SAME FARM. His residence is LEEUWBERG (BLFN.) and hers is “DITO” — the farm the Commandant died on, where the register had placed his widow eleven months earlier. Married on GEBODEN, the banns, with consent given by the MOEDER: the bride was a minor and her father had been dead fifteen weeks. Entry stamped 5202; solemnised by GUSTAV RADLOFF, V.D.M. at Bloemfontein. Both signed — J. H. Kolbe and Rose Maria Mc Cabe. THE SECOND WITNESS IS A KOLBE: the signature reads G. A. KOLBE, and the first is the same illegible hand that witnessed the 1871 marriage. FamilySearch 1:1:6ZHB-XQ1R, image 3:1:3Q9M-CSK8-G98V-M, DGS 008145483 image 221 of 283. a record read here
Willem Hermanus “William Henry” Booyzen × Catherine Maria Sophia “Kathleen” Barry 22 December 1879 Lady Grey He signs as a BOER. The signature on this register is the one this archive has spent most of its time arguing about: is the letter a z or an s? a record read here
Hercules Johannes Mountjoy × Maria Sophia van Niekerk 8 October 1888 Dordrecht Twenty-two and twenty. Five of their eight children are named for a parent or a grandparent, and one dead daughter's name was given again four years later. a record read here
James Jonathan Mountjoy × Maria Louisa Bertha Kumm bef. 1890 Dordrecht In community of property. Their two death notices were typed on the same afternoon in February 1938, hers three and a half years late — “death not reported”. a record read here
Gerrit Jacobus Booÿsen × Isabella Frederika Coetsee 23 March 1896 Middelburg, Cape In community of property. She died in 1930 and he did not report it until 1943. a record read here
Petrus Jacobus Pretorius × Margarietha Wilhelmina Elizabeth Barry 8 July 1901 Caerlaverock, Barkly Oost “In woonhuis D. Schoeman” — in the house of a man tried as a Cape Rebel the month before, under martial law, witnessed by him. a record read here
Willem Hermanus Booyzen of Indwe × Susanna Adriana Roodt 21 September 1908 Indwe Certificate 13. He is 22 and a MIJNWERKER of Dugmore Mijn; she is 16 and her parents had to consent. Their son had been born four months earlier. a record read here
Joseph Heinrich Daschner × Catharina Maria Sophia Booysen bef. 1921 Indwe The same village where her father had died in 1905. His 1942 notice enters her as “born Booyzen”, with a z, from her own dictation. a record read here

The lines that married in 10 families

10 lines, 238 people — more people than the name itself holds. Not one of them carries a generation number. That is worth saying plainly: this archive numbers its own descent and does not number the families that joined it, so they cannot be ordered by when they arrived, only by how much of each is held. They are ordered by that.
