Margaret Downing
THE DAY IS SETTLED AT THE 25th, AND IT WAS SETTLED BY A DOCUMENT ALREADY ON THE SHELF. Her own DEATH NOTICE, filed at Burgersdorp on 30 January 1868, answers question 7 — «The day of the decease» — “25th November 1867”, and question 4 gives her age as “64 years 9 months & 2 days”. Take that age off the 25th and you land on 23 February 1803, which is exactly the birth the stone cuts: the notice confirms the stone and the stone confirms the notice. This record carried “2_ Nov 1867 — the day illegible on the stone” until 12 October 2026, while the 25th was ALREADY WRITTEN in five other files of this archive — places.json, timeline.json, searched.json, corrections.json and the work list. The stone’s digit really is illegible and the inscription is still quoted with the gap; what was wrong was only the date this archive kept for her. IT IS THE SAME FAULT THE JOHAN CASIMIR ROW DIAGNOSED IN SEPTEMBER, in the same file: a search of the index is not a search of the holdings. THE ANSWER WAS ALSO ON A PHOTOGRAPH THIS ARCHIVE HAS HAD ALL ALONG. The Burgersdorp monument is on the Kolbe page, and the caption quoted it as far as “ALSO HIS RELICT MARGARET DOWNING…” AND STOPPED THERE. The stone goes on: “BORN IN LONDON 23 FEBRUARY 1803 AND DIED AT BURGHERSDORP 2_ NOVEMBER 1867.” HER BIRTH IS NOW A DATE — 23 February 1803, where this archive had “c. 1804” — AND THE DEATH IS SETTLED AT 1867. Her son’s obituary of 15 April 1868 said she had died “about three months since”, which would have been January 1868; it was nearly five months, and a journalist rounding is a journalist rounding. THE DAY IS A 2 AND A DIGIT THAT WILL NOT RESOLVE at any magnification, and is not guessed. The Cape estate ran on: MOOC 13/1/253 no. 2, “DOWNING, MARGARET, WIDOW OF KOLBE, GEORGE AUGUSTUS. LIQUIDATION AND DISTRIBUTION ACCOUNT”, 1869 — and she had made a WILL OF HER OWN in 1854, MOOC 7/1/295 no. 70, ten years after she was widowed. Married at fifteen in Shoreditch, signing with a mark. Died owning a house and a farm. 20 SEPTEMBER 2026 — HER MOTHER IS STILL NOBODY, AND THAT IS NOW A TESTED POSITION RATHER THAN A GAP. A user tree gave her as MARY KING POOLEY (1768–1834); this archive’s own copy of the tree gives MARY P KING. FindMyPast holds exactly ONE Downing–Pooley marriage before civil registration — JOHN DOWNING and MARY POOLEY at WELCOMBE, DEVON, 10 MAY 1802, nine months and thirteen days before Margaret’s birth — AND THAT COUPLE STAYED IN DEVON, baptising a child at Welcombe in 1803 and more in 1806, 1809 and 1810, where Margaret was born in LONDON. RULED OUT. And the last Downing record in that parish is A MARY DOWNING BURIED THERE IN 1834, which is the year both trees give her mother’s death — SO “POOLEY” IS VERY PROBABLY A PREVIOUS RESEARCHER’S RECONSTRUCTION out of one Devon marriage and one Devon burial, and not a record at all. FROM A USER TREE, NOT ADOPTED. Her own 1867 death notice asks for her parents and answers “Both dead”, naming neither. AND THERE IS A CERTIFICATE, IN A MUSEUM. The DSAB draft on her husband lists among its sources “ALBANY MUSEUM, GRAHAMSTAD: FOTOKOPIE VAN DIE HUWELIKSSERTIFIKAAT VAN G.A. KOLBE (1819)”. THIS ARCHIVE HOLDS THE ALLEGATION AND NOT THE MARRIAGE — the sworn statement made to get the licence, which is where the false age was sworn, and not the register entry that followed it. A photocopy of the certificate has been sitting in Grahamstown since before 1992. The same entry gives her dates as “(1803–1867)”, WHICH IS WHAT THE BURGERSDORP STONE SAYS, from a source that had not read the stone this way.

- 15 Sep 2026 — Margaret Downing “c. 1804, London” — and, for a day, a death date thrown into doubt by a newspaper
THE STONE HAD BOTH ANSWERS AND THIS ARCHIVE HAD THE STONE. The Burgersdorp monument has been on the Kolbe page for weeks, photographed and captioned; the caption quoted it as far as “ALSO HIS RELICT MARGARET DOWNING…” AND STOPPED. The next two lines read “BORN IN LONDON 23 FEBRUARY 1803 AND DIED AT BURGHERSDORP 2_ NOVEMBER 1867.” Her birth moves from a guessed year to a date. AND THE DEATH WAS NEVER IN DOUBT: yesterday's Grahamstown Journal obituary said she died “about three months since” — January 1868 — and this archive published the discrepancy rather than resolving it. It was nearly five months, and a journalist rounding is a journalist rounding. THE FAULT IS THE CAPTION: a transcription that stops before the end of an inscription is not a transcription, and this one hid two facts in plain sight for weeks. Where it stands → - 20 Sep 2026 — The Welcombe marriage of 10 May 1802 is a candidate for Margaret Downing’s parents, and a strengthened one
IT IS NOT. WITHDRAWN THE SAME DAY IT WAS RAISED. Published this morning as a candidate on a name match and a nine-month interval; called STRENGTHENED at lunchtime when a London baptism could not be found for her. THE QUESTION NOBODY ASKED UNTIL EVENING WAS WHETHER THE WELCOMBE COUPLE STAYED. They did. Every Downing record in that parish reads: 1802 JOHN MARRIAGE, 1803 JOHN BAPTISM, 1806 William baptism, 1809 Emmey baptism, 1810 Elizabeth baptism. THEY BAPTISED A CHILD AT WELCOMBE THE YEAR AFTER THE WEDDING AND WENT ON DOING IT. Margaret was born in LONDON in February 1803. AND THE LAST LINE OF THE PARISH LIST EXPLAINS THE WHOLE THREAD: a MARY DOWNING BURIED AT WELCOMBE IN 1834, which is the year both trees give Margaret’s mother. A previous researcher almost certainly found the one Downing–Pooley marriage in England and a Mary Downing burial in the year they wanted, in the same tiny parish, and joined them — the same search this archive ran today, stopping one question earlier. SO “MARY KING POOLEY, 1768–1834” IS PROBABLY NOT A RECORD BUT A RECONSTRUCTION, which also explains why this archive’s own copy of the tree calls her MARY P KING: two compilers, the same fragments, two guesses. Where it stands → - 21 Sep 2026 — Work list row 177, on the 2012 Barry register report: “There is no Casmier, Casimir or Kasimir anywhere in this archive.”
HE IS IN BOTH OF HIS PARENTS' DEATH NOTICES. The Settler's notice, signed M. Kolbe — Margaret, the widow — at Colesberg in January 1845, names ten children and JOHAN CASIMIR KOLBE is the fifth of them. Margaret Downing's own notice of 25 November 1867, signed by her son-in-law G. D. O. Werdmuller, names him again — and that document is careful about the dead, entering Mary Elizabeth as “(dead), who was married to George F. Enslin” and him plainly. So he was alive at about twenty-three. Both transcriptions have been innotes/documents-transcribed.mdsince 10 September. He is also on the archive's own Kolbe page, in the list of children, with the variant spelling “Casiner” already recorded — and the same page's prose singles out Casimir by name as one of the family's extraordinary forenames. WHAT WENT WRONG IS THE SHAPE OF THE SEARCH. The archive's people list was searched and the archive was reported on.people.jsis where a person's record lives; it is not where the archive's evidence lives, and this man had no record precisely because nobody had joined the notice to the list. A search of the index is not a search of the holdings, and the one place he was missing is the one place that was looked. The compiled report was right and this archive was wrong about its own documents — its “Casmier” is a third spelling of a name in two primary sources. He now has a record. Where it stands →

…Mother: Unknown ." His grandfather was George Augustus Kolbe — who married at sixteen on a sworn lie in Shoreditch, sailed on the Nautilus in 1819 as an 1820 Settler , preached across the Orange River, and named a Karoo farm after the Württemberg his own father had left. His grandmother was Margaret Downing of London. Both of them lie under a cut-stone monument at Burgersdorp — names, London birthplaces, farm and dates carved into it — about forty miles from where that notice was written. A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
