Gerthardus Lodewikus Booysen

THE ONE DOCUMENT THAT NAMES HIM HAS BEEN WEAKENED, AND BY SOMEBODY WHO HAD NOT SEEN IT. On 14 September 2026 PIETER VAN ZYL, answering this archive’s G2G question, guessed that the 1876 informant had reached for a name already in the household — and added, from memory, that he thought a CHILD of Petrus Jacobus was called Gerhardus Lodewicus. HE IS RIGHT, AND THE CHILD IS ON THE SAME SHEET: line 12 of that very notice names JAN GERTHARDUS LODEWIKUS BOOIJSEN among the eight children. So the name this archive takes from LINE 3, for the dead man’s FATHER, is the back half of his SON’S name, eight lines below, in one clerk’s hand — and the half that is dropped, JAN, is the name de Villiers gives as the real father. THIS DOES NOT PROVE THE FATHER WAS JAN and this archive is not swapping one unproved father for another. It removes the only document that has ever carried this name from the evidence for him. The top of the male line is now held up by less than it was this morning. He still has no birth date, no death date, and no parents: the oldest open question on this site is about him. 15 SEPTEMBER 2026 — AND THE LAST ESCAPE ROUTE IS CLOSED. This archive's standing objection was that de Villiers's 1893 original was revised by Pama in 1981, and a revision can move a man; if the 1981 edition had relocated Petrus Jacobus, the death notice would stand. RIËL SMIT, WHO HAS THE 1981 EDITION: “Yes, DE VILLIERS & PAMA (1981) STILL PLACE PETRUS JACOBUS (b3c4d7) b. 21 SEPT 1788 UNDER JAN b3c4.” Pieter van Zyl adds that he SEARCHED FOR A MARRIAGE BETWEEN A GERHARDUS LODEWICUS AND A MAGDALENA DE BEER AND COULD NOT FIND ONE. FOUR THINGS NOW POINT ONE WAY and the only thing pointing the other is line 3 of Notice 678. THE SPINE IS STILL NOT BEING MOVED ON THIS: everything against him is a printed genealogy agreeing with its own earlier edition, and what he has is a primary document signed by a son. WHAT ENDS IT IS THE BAPTISM ENTRY OF 21 SEPTEMBER 1788 — the register de Villiers compiled his entry from, naming the father in a contemporary hand. It is now the first item on the errands page.

The Spine

…Seven generations up, the male line simply ends. One thing has changed here, and it is worth being precise about how little. Until the 1876 Sterfkennis was read, generation seven existed only because a family tree said so. It now exists because a nineteenth-century clerk wrote "Gerthardus Lödewikus Booijsen" and "Magdalena de Beer" on his son's death notice. See the line → 15 SEPTEMBER 2026 — AND THAT CLERK IS NOW THE ONLY THING HOLDING THIS ROW UP. De Villiers's printed Cape genealogy of 1893 places this Petrus Jacobus under a father called JAN , and Riël Smit confirms that de Villiers & Pama’s 1981 revision still does .…

…Two of these men married twice , and in both cases the second wife was found long after the first had been written down. Both second marriages are given in the Married column; the ancestor chart has one slot for a mother and can only draw one of them. The chart → Generation7 Gerthardus Lodewikus Booysen and Magdelena Elisabeth De Beer (1754–1843) The joint here will not bear weight. He has no birth date, no death date, no father and no mother. He exists because a clerk wrote his name on his son's 1876 death notice - and de Villiers's printed Cape genealogy puts that son under a father called Jan instead. One primary document signed by a son, against a printed genealogy agreeing with itself.…

Disputed

…A CONCLUSION THAT SURVIVES BOTH READINGS OF THE EVIDENCE IS THE ONLY KIND WORTH KEEPING. What the disagreement does cost is her: she has two sets of parents and no way to choose, and the baptism register of 5 October 1788 at Cape Town would end it. → Gerthardus Lodewikus Booysen — did he exist? The 1876 Rustenburg Sterfkennis of Petrus Jacobus Booijsen, Notice 678, names his parents on line 3 as GERTHARDUS LÖDEWIKUS BOOIJSEN and MAGDALENA DE BEER. De Villiers (1893) and de Villiers & Pama (1981) both place that Petrus Jacobus under JAN Booijsen, b3c4. The mother agrees; the father does not. Serious FOUR THINGS NOW POINT ONE WAY AND THE CHART HAS NOT BEEN MOVED.…

…And the mother on line 3 — Magdalena de Beer — agrees with the book exactly. The informant got the woman right and the man wrong, which is what an informant reaching for a half-remembered pair of names would do. And the spine is not being moved on this The pedigree still shows Gerthardus Lodewikus Booysen at the top, marked open, and it stays there today. Everything above is secondary. De Villiers is a printed genealogy of 1893; Pama’s revision agreeing with it is one book agreeing with its own earlier edition, not two sources agreeing. Against it stands a primary document, a death notice signed by a son, and this archive does not let a book overrule a page just because the book is tidier.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
