G.A. Kolbe of Piet Retief

A DATE FOR THE TWIN, IF IT IS HIM. The stone at PIET RETIEF reads “VADER EN MOEDER — G.A. KOLBE — GEB. 23 FEB. 1836 — OVERL. 7 JAN. 1913 — A.M. KOLBE — GEB. 4 MEI 1843 — OVERL. 21 SEP. 1907 — VAN HUN KINDERS”. The Settler's ninth and tenth children were TWINS born at BURGERSDORP IN 1836, Charlotte Felicia and George Augustus, and this archive has never had a day for either. A G.A. KOLBE BORN 23 FEBRUARY 1836 IS EXACTLY THE RIGHT MAN IN EXACTLY THE RIGHT YEAR — and it would date his twin sister too. IT IS INITIALS AND A YEAR, NOT A NAME AND A PARENT, and this archive has spent today being careful about exactly this. It would also give the OTHER George Augustus Kolbe — born Burgersdorp 2 October 1861, dead Standerton 1934, buried Wakkerstroom — a plausible father aged twenty-five, which is the shape the eastern Transvaal Kolbes have been missing.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds G.A. Kolbe of Piet Retief as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
