More than one person of this name. This archive holds 2 people called George Mountjoy, and they are gathered here together because merging them silently would be worse than saying so. The surrounding text on each page below usually makes it clear which is which.
  • George Mountjoy — 11 Jun 1823, Cradock to —. Saddle maker — his father's trade, learned after his father died when he was four. Married Maria Sophia Botha at Cradock, 20 Aug 1848, certificate 735. Thirteen children.
  • George Mountjoy — 1889 to 1963. The child baptised at Barkly Oost on 6 Oct 1889 — second cousin to the Booyzen daughter baptised in the same register three weeks earlier.
2 corrections on this site name George Mountjoy. A correction here is filed against the page it changed, not against a person, so until now it could be read on the corrections register and nowhere else — least of all on the page of the person it was about.
  • 17 Sep 2026 — Seventeen people had a page saying they are “not yet discussed on any page”
Among them GEORGE AUGUSTUS KOLBE, the 1820 Settler, named 155 times in the built site; JOHN BARRY, 158; GEORGE MOUNTJOY, 140; PETRUS JACOBUS BOOYSEN, 110; JOHANNA CATHARINA MOUNTJOY, 89. THE DATA WAS FINE AND THE BUILD THREW IT AWAY. dossiers.py dropped any name that was a strict prefix of a longer person’s name — a rule written to stop “John Barry” swallowing “John Barry Booyzen”, which instead silenced the shorter man entirely. The fix keeps the shorter name and fences it with a negative lookahead, so it matches everywhere except where the longer name begins. 2,428 mentions came back. NOTHING REFUSED THE BUILD WHILE THIS WAS TRUE, so a gate now does: checkregisters.py fails when a person the dossier calls undiscussed is named in the built pages. Found because the estate asked this archive to look for a fault the Mazza archive had just had. Where it stands →
  • 17 Sep 2026 — The Burgersdorp sweep of images 605–818 found five new people
Three. Johanna Catharina Mountjoy, born 28 January 1860, was already held in full — a daughter of George Mountjoy who married William Henry Keys — and the sweep only confirmed her and gave her a reference. Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller was already held from a 1907 petition and a 1953 estate; what the sweep added was his birth and his mother, which is a real gain and not a new person. THE DUPLICATE PERSON RECORDS WERE CAUGHT BY THE BUILD'S OWN NAME-COLLISION CHECK for the first and by reading the register for the second, before either reached a page. The rule it costs: a sweep that returns a name is checked against the archive before it is called a find. Where it stands →

…Two families, two centuries, the same box on the same printed form, the same answer. Why this archive exists → "Birth-place: Europe." Not a country. The most that was remembered of where he came from was that it was not here. A trade, passed down 1840, line 5 — Saddler Documented James Montjoy was a saddler at Cradock. His son George Mountjoy — four years old when his father died — is recorded at his own 1848 marriage as a saddle maker , in the same town. The archive had George's trade already and treated it as the first recorded for a Mountjoy. It was the second. The boy learned his dead father's trade.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
