Martha Angeline Kolbe
HER STONE IS READ, AND IT TAKES BACK WHAT THIS ARCHIVE SAID THIS MORNING. “TER GEDACHTENIS VAN ONS GELIEFDE KLEINE — MARTHA ANGELINE KOLBE — GEBOREN 9 OCT. 1901 — OVERLEDEN 8 DEC. 1901 — HEBR. 6”, and cut across the base, the mason’s town: NEWCASTLE. IT STANDS IN WAKKERSTROOM MAIN CEMETERY, NOT AT VOLKSRUST. The index this archive read gives her burial as “Volksrust, Eastvaal District Council” — which is the DISTRICT, not the town, and Wakkerstroom lies inside it. WITH THE TOWN GOES THE CAMP: a family stone in a town churchyard, in Dutch, cut by a monumental mason twenty-five miles away in Natal, is not a camp burial, and this archive should not have gone near the word. She was sixty days old, she died in the middle of the war, and that is all that can be said. She carries the name of her great-aunt Martha Angelina, baptised at Colesberg in 1868.
Every record naming Martha Angeline Kolbe →
No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds Martha Angeline Kolbe as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

- 14 Sep 2026 — Martha Angeline Kolbe, sixty days old, was “BURIED AT VOLKSRUST”, and Volksrust held a concentration camp
Both halves withdrawn, six hours after publishing. HER STONE IS IN WAKKERSTROOM MAIN CEMETERY. The index this archive read gives the burial as “Volksrust, Eastvaal District Council, Mpumalanga” — and that is a DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY, not a town; Wakkerstroom lies inside it. This archive read a modern administrative area as a place of burial, which is a failure of reading and not of the source. WITH THE TOWN GOES THE CAMP. The stone reads “TER GEDACHTENIS VAN ONS GELIEFDE KLEINE”, in Dutch, and the mason's town is cut across its base: NEWCASTLE, twenty-five miles away in Natal. A family stone in a town churchyard, cut by a monumental mason in another colony, is not a camp burial. The care taken in the original entry — “records the burial place without claiming the camp” — was not enough, because naming the camp at all in an entry about a child who died in December 1901 makes the claim whatever the sentence says. The documents
…The archive’s own note was careful and said “eight of their children are in the Dutch Reformed registers” — the ninth was not, and he is named for his father. The Angeline question, answered by exclusion Martha Angelina Kolbe’s record carried a warning: an Angeline Kolbe died at Wakkerstroom in 1900 , and a Martha Angeline Kolbe was buried at Volksrust in 1901 aged two months , and “neither can yet be attached to her, and this archive will not guess.” It does not have to guess now. Martha Angelina is named as an heir on her mother’s estate in 1923 and her father’s in 1929 . She was alive for both.…

…Daniel's death registration carries the words G A Kolbe's son , which the index mangled into G A Kolbelsson — and that misprint is the line that ties the graves to the old man. Two women the war took, and one this archive cannot name Angeline Kolbe , aged 28, died at Wakkerstroom on 15 November 1900 . Martha Angeline Kolbe , born 9 October 1901, died 8 December 1901, buried at Volksrust — sixty days old. Volksrust held a concentration camp, and this archive records the burial place without claiming the cause, because it has read no camp register that names the child. Angeline is not the camp grave NAAIRS holds — that is a G.E. Kolbe, aged 35 , a different age in a different year in a different town.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
