Willem Hermanus Pieterzen

Godfather at the 1851 font and the boy's namesake — Johanna Catharina's half-brother by her mother's first marriage. His surname, spelled with a z by the same clerk, is what emptied this archive's name argument.

This archive holds Willem Hermanus Pieterzen as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. • 15 Sep 2026 — “WILLEM HERMANUS PIETERZEN — Anna Catharina Slier's FIRST husband”
HE IS THE SON. De Villiers's volume 3 gives “HERMANUS PIETERSEN, namen van ouders onbekend, gehuwd 5 April 1807 met ANNA CATHARINA SLIER”, and their children as “1 Willem Hermanus, gedoopt 12 Maart 1809; 2 Johan Christiaan, gedoopt 28 April 1810”. THIS ARCHIVE BUILT ONE MAN OUT OF TWO DOCUMENTS THAT SPELL HIM DIFFERENTLY — the 1817 marriage register's HARMANUS PIETERZE and the 1840 death notice's WILLIAM PIETERSEN — and a long name looked like a way to reconcile them. The husband is Hermanus; Willem Hermanus is the boy baptised in 1809. This archive half knew, because its own note already called the 1851 godfather “his son”. THE NAMING CLAIM SURVIVES AND IMPROVES: Willem Hermanus is Willem for his mother's father, Willem Slier of Hamburg, and Hermanus for his own father. A SECOND HALF-BROTHER, JOHAN CHRISTIAAN, WAS INVISIBLE FOR AS LONG AS THE TWO MEN WERE ONE. Where it stands →

…So of the three figures the archive had, the marriage register is the outlier : it gives his age as 22 in December 1879, when he was 28 . His 1905 death registration says 55 , which is right within a year. The 1879 entry is wrong by six years. And he was named for his godfather The witnesses are Willem Hermanus Pieterzen , Maria Catharina Magdalena Potgieter and Xaverius Hermanus Pieterzen . (The archive scan corrects this archive's earlier reading of the surname as Pietersen — see below; the first given name, earlier read as Iwerus , is still not certain.) Johanna Catharina Mountjoy's half-brothers were Pieterzens — the sons of Anna Catharina Sleer by her first marriage.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
