Charles Andrew Werdmuller
THE DATES NOW CLOSE AROUND HIM, THOUGH NO DOCUMENT YET NAMES HIS MOTHER. His father’s first wife, AUGUSTA LOUISA KOLBE, MADE A WILL IN 1868 AND DIED IN 1873 — KAB MOOC 7/1/332 no. 205, “KOLBE, AUGUSTA LOUISA, WIFE OF COENRAAD JOHANNES OTTO WERDMULLER VAN ELGG”, filed 1873 — and his father remarried on 7 JULY 1874. IN 1882 CHARLES ANDREW WAS IN BUSINESS WITH HIS FATHER as C.A. Werdmuller and Company, and in February 1884 he married. A SON OF THE 1874 MARRIAGE WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVEN AND NINE. He can only be a child of the first marriage, and the first wife is the Settler’s daughter. THE ONE LOOPHOLE LEFT is an earlier wife before Augusta Louisa, and his father’s 1882 DEATH NOTICE would close it by naming the children. SECOND SON OF THE LATE C.J.O. WERDMULLER OF BURGHERSDORP, married at Wesley Church, Queenstown, on 13 FEBRUARY 1884 to CHARLOTTE ANNE CALLAGHAN, eldest daughter of Hugh Callaghan of Ashby Manor. Of STEYNSBURG then, and by 1909 CHARLES WERDMULLER, J.P., OF HOOPSTAD in the Orange River Colony — the town his wife died in. HIS MOTHER IS NOT NAMED ON ANYTHING READ HERE. If he is the child born 14 February 1857 at Burgersdorp he is AUGUSTA LOUISA KOLBE’S SON and a grandson of the 1820 Settler; if he belongs to his father’s 1874 marriage he is no relation at all, and a man marrying in 1884 as a second son cannot be. THE DATES FAVOUR KOLBE AND THE DOCUMENTS DO NOT SAY IT.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds Charles Andrew Werdmuller as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
