A MIJNWERKER of DUGMORE MIJN when he married Susanna Adriana Roodt, 16, at Indwe on 21 September 1908 — the only miner in five generations of read occupations, and the answer to the last line of the family testimony. Two children in nine months by two women of the same surname, both entered “onecht”. His mother stood godmother at the first font, which is how this archive knows whose son he is. AND THEN JOHANNESBURG: a WILLIAM HERMAN BOOYZEN, 47, born Cape Province, married, EX MINER UNDERGROUND, of 62 Langford Street, Booysens, died at Johannesburg Hospital on 29 July 1932 of a perforated duodenal ulcer after about one day, and was buried at BRIXTON on 31 July. The occupation, the province, the age within a year and the cemetery all fit; no parents are named, because a civil registration does not ask. And then the grave register closes it: GRAVE 6889 holds “Boysen, William” and, thirty-six years later, SUSANNA ADRIANA BOOYZEN, buried 29 August 1968 — the woman he married at Indwe in 1908.
