James Henry Barry

SETTLED, 14 September 2026, and it removes a candidate rather than adding one. The HENRY JAONAS BARRY who turned up on 13 September — “baptised at twenty years old” in 1868, and briefly a candidate for a tenth child — IS THIS MAN. The same event is indexed twice: once as Henry Jaonas Barry, baptism 13 Nov 1868, and once as HENNERY JAMES BERRY, baptism 13 Nov 1848. Same birth date of 13 July 1848, same parents, same collection, and FamilySearch attaches BOTH to one tree person, James Henry Barry 1848–1939. The volume decides the year on its own: the register is “GRAAFF-REINET. BAPTISM RECORDS 1846–1851”, and a baptism of 1868 cannot sit in a book that closes in 1851. So he was baptised at four months, not at twenty, AT GRAAFF-REINET — not at Cape Town or Tulbagh, which is what both index entries say for the place. The birth-spacing argument made against him held: his brother John Augustus II was born 13 March 1847 and he was born sixteen months later. THE IMAGE HAS BEEN LOCATED AND NOT READ — identifier apid:TH-909-70517-31299-17. Named on the 1915 death notice, which he swore himself. The index now dates him: born about 1847, dead at Barkly East on 23 June 1939, having outlived his father by thirty-six years. BUT THAT YEAR CANNOT STAND. His brother John Augustus Barry II was born 13 MARCH 1847 off a register, and “about 1847” here is not a date at all — it is an age worked back from the 1939 death. Two brothers cannot share it. A relationship search on his mother's surname turned up a HENRY JAONAS BARRY born 13 July 1848 and baptised at twenty, which is where a next child belongs; whether that is this man under a clerk's ear is UNPROVED and the register is unread.

His 1903 registration says they had ELEVEN children; his own death notice names EIGHT; HER death notice, estate 1291, names NINE. The ninth is WILLIAM, who appears on nothing else. • 14 Sep 2026 — A relationship search had found one name the Barry notices never gave
It found none. HENRY JAONAS BARRY is JAMES HENRY BARRY, who was already in this archive — the same baptism indexed twice, once as Henry Jaonas with the year read as 1868 and once as HENNERY JAMES BERRY with it read as 1848. Same birth date, same parents, and FamilySearch attaches both to one tree person. The register itself decides: “Graaff-Reinet. Baptism Records 1846–1851” cannot hold an 1868 entry. So the “baptised at twenty years old” that made him interesting was a mis-transcribed year, and “Jaonas” was a mis-read “James” — which is what the archive's own register search implied when it found JONAS nowhere among the Barrys or Kolbes. The eleven-against-nine gap is unchanged: TWO children are still missing, not one. Where it stands →
  • 28 Sep 2026 — John Augustus Barry I and Margaretha Kolbe married about 1850 at Burghersdorp
THEIR ELDEST SON WAS BORN IN 1847, AND THIS ARCHIVE DREW HIM UNDER THAT MARRIAGE. The 1850 rested on one word — “probably” — written by their son R. P. Barry on his father's death notice in 1915, sixty-five years after the event. The same son had written “Unknown” on his mother's notice three months earlier, which this archive quoted elsewhere as a sign of how little he knew, and then used his guess as a date anyway. Meanwhile people.js said “married 1846” the whole time. Two of this archive's own files disagreed, and the marriage page published the wrong one. WHAT IT IS NOW: 23 FEBRUARY 1846 at COLESBERG, marked inf because the exact date and place come from Pama, reported in a letter of November 1999 that had been in David's files for twenty-seven years. THE BOOK IS NOT WHAT MAKES IT SAFE — this archive does not let a book overrule a page. 1850 is refuted by arithmetic on the archive's own data, and 1846 was already here. HOW IT WAS CAUGHT MATTERS MORE THAN THE DATE. Not by a gate, not by an audit, but by a stranger's letter arriving at a page nobody had re-read. There is a gate now — child-before-wedding refuses a household whose marriage postdates a child drawn under it, and it fired on this row and on James Henry Barry, born 1848, before the fix. …The reasoning below is left standing because the archive argued itself to the right answer before the record confirmed it. HENRY JAONAS BARRY IS JAMES HENRY BARRY. The same baptism is indexed twice. One entry reads Henry Jaonas Barry, baptism 13 Nov 1868 ; the other reads Hennery James Berry, baptism 13 Nov 1848 . Both give the birth as 13 July 1848 , both name John Barry and Margret Willemina Kolbe , both sit in the Cape Town Archives DRC collection, and FamilySearch attaches both to one tree person — James Henry Barry, 1848–1939 , which is this archive's man, dead at Barkly East on 23 June 1939. The volume settles the year without the image being read.…

…And the register search that found Jonas nowhere among the Barrys or Kolbes was pointing at the truth: it was never a family name, it was a clerk's James . The withdrawal → The name as indexed Dates What it might be Henry Jaonas Barry born 13 Jul 1848 baptised 13 Nov 1868 Baptised at twenty years old , which is itself unusual enough to be worth the image. Indexed twice, once to Cape Town and once to Tulbagh — both a long way from this family's Cape midlands. A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
