He remains exactly what he was: an unresolved second William, indexed twice over to Graaff-Reinet and Dordrecht , eight years after the Burgersdorp baptism . On Henry Jaonas there is an argument, and it comes entirely out of figures this archive already held. John Augustus Barry II was born 13 March 1847 and baptised four weeks later — a documented date, off a register. James Henry Barry is carried in this archive as born "about 1847" , and that figure is not a register at all: it is an age worked back from his death at Barkly East on 23 June 1939. Two brothers cannot both be born in 1847 , and the approximate date is the one that has to give way.…
