David Schalk Booysen
PRISONER OF WAR. A printed transport list in the Pretoria government archives, image group 008019246, carries THREE CONSECUTIVE BOOYZENS shipped on the CITY OF CAMBRIDGE on 3 JUNE 1901, all entered from PRETORIA: 18463 STEPHANUS FRANCOIS, 28 · 18464 PETRUS JACOBUS, 29 · 18465 DAVID SCHALK, 54. Consecutive numbers on one transport means taken together. Age 54 against a birth of 9 June 1848, which would have made him 52 and six days short of 53 when the ship sailed. THE FULLER REGISTER WAS THEN FOUND, and it is better than the De List in every respect: item 1 of the same film, image 126, gives all three as living at PRETORIA, riding with the PRETORIA COMMANDO, and TAKEN AT TOLOSBERG ON 25 APRIL 1901. Its ages are 26, 27 and 53, which match this archive's own dates where the De List's 28, 29 and 54 did not. If it is him, he was a Transvaal burgher in arms at fifty-two, taken and deported, and he came back — he remarried at Pretoria in November 1905. Fourth on the 1863 list, and THE DIRECT ANCESTOR'S BROTHER — Willem Hermanus is sixth on the same list. For the whole of this project he was a line on that list and nothing else. His wife's 1900 death notice gives him a household: married ELIZABETHA MARGARETHA MARAIS at LADY GREY, the same small Cape church where his brother married Kathleen Barry in 1879; eight children; and by 1900 he was at Pretoria, living in a zinc building in Market Street. He signed her notice there in March 1904 — and on 27 NOVEMBER 1905 he married again at Pretoria, to JOHANNA ELENA STOLS, widow Lowies, of Skinners Court. He was 56, a widower of GOEDE HOOP, PRETORIA, and the register gives his birthplace as CRADOCK. The Remarks column cites his remarriage certificate from the Master, NO. 4795 — which is the number of his first wife’s death notice, so the two documents point at each other and the identification needs no inference. His own death is still not found.

- 14 Sep 2026 — The Wonderboom deeds register showed a transfer from M. J. Booyzen, widow, to David Schalk Booyzen on 9 April 1907
The transferor is right and the date is not. Her gravestone at Rebecca Street, Pretoria, reads “MAGDALENA JOHANNA BOOYZEN (GEB. BEZUIDENHOUT), GEB. 8 MEI 1870, OORL. 29 JAN 1955” — so the ledger's “8/5/1870” beside her name is HER BIRTH DATE, which identifies her beyond doubt. But her husband PETRUS JACOBUS BOOYZEN died on 25 MARCH 1947, so she was not a widow in 1907 and cannot have transferred anything as one that year. The 9 April 1907 read off that row belongs to a different row: the ledger's columns were mis-aligned in the reading. What survives is the identification; what is withdrawn is the date, and with it the suggestion that David Schalk Booysen could be carried to 1907. Where it stands → - 14 Sep 2026 — The De List's prisoner numbers are a separate series and do not locate these men in the fuller register
They are the same series and they locate them exactly. The claim came from misreading a leading digit: image 139 of item 1 begins at 19431, not 18431, which the batch title on image 136 states outright — “Nos. 19,431 to 20,705”. The de Beer entries read as 18463–18465 were 19463–19465. In the correct batch, image 126, numbers 18463, 18464 and 18465 are STEFANUS FRANCOIS, PETRUS JACOBUS and DAVID SCHALK BOOYSEN. The 1900 notice calls David Schalk's Stephanus François an unmarried major, which is exactly what this man was. But the register has NO column for parents and NO column for birthplace, so it cannot decide anything. AND HIS OWN ELEVEN CHILDREN ADD A THIRD POINT. His 1940 estate names them, and the eldest is DAVID SCHALK BOOYZEN.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
