Jan Gerhardus Lodewicus Booysen

Seventh on the 1863 list, and carries the name of the man at the top of the line. THIS ARCHIVE HAD HIM DYING IN 1885 AND HAS TAKEN IT BACK: estate TAB MHG O/2899 belongs to his uncle of the same name, born 1818, and the death date was never anything but the estate’s year read backwards onto the wrong man. Nothing is known about what became of him — AND THERE IS NOW ONE PLACE TO LOOK. A JGL BOOYZEN countersigned the money papers of a farm school at KWAGGAFONTEIN, DISTRICT MARICO, through 1898 and into 1899: the subsidy application, the book orders, all four quarterly returns, the writing-off of a £61-6-0 deficit, and a letter arguing that the government had paid £8 too little. The elder man of these initials was thirteen years dead by then. This one would have been forty-two, and Marico adjoins the district his uncle died in. IT IS A CANDIDATE AND NOT AN IDENTIFICATION — the index gives initials, a farm and a post office, and Jan Gerhardus Lodewicus is one of the commonest name-strings in the surname. The file itself would carry a signature.

The documents

…Since the Transvaal references were first pulled out of NAAIRS, this archive has carried a row saying TAB MHG O/2899 — Jan Gerhardus Lodewikus Booyzen — 1885 , and attached it to the seventh child on the 1863 death notice: Jan Gerhardus Lodewicus Booysen, born 4 December 1855 . His entry on the people index read "he died in the Transvaal at about thirty." He did not. That sentence had no source except the estate reference itself. The archive read the year off the file number, wrote it into his life as a death date, and then quoted the death date back as if it were evidence.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
